Frequently Asked Questions

How does eating low-carb help me to lose weight/size?

Eating low-carb is all about identifying your body’s fuel source. When you eat fat and carbs (i.e., fries) together, the body has to decide which source to use for energy and which source to store.

Typically carbs are burned first because of their quick-burning characteristics, and fats are stored in the body. However, we sometimes eat too many carbs to burn them up quickly, so the body stores any extra carbs as well. I don’t think I have to tell you where the body stores these extra sources of food!

When you only give your body a fat source along with minimal carbs, your body is clear on what should be burned and burns the fat and minimal carbs with more efficiency, leaving no extra stores of fat or carbs to be plastered onto your midsection or thighs.  Just remember to always eat a protein with every low-carb meal!

How low is low-carb?

Keep your net carbs under 20 grams per day, or set yourself up with an app like Carb Manager to determine how many carbs work for you and your goals.  These applications help to track not only net carbs, but total carbs, fat, protein, and calories.  While calories are not counted on keto diets, it's been found that calories do factor into the ability to lose weight.

What about protein?

Protein is key and needs to be incorporated into every meal. Protein sources include: pork, beef, chicken, fish, yogurt, cheese, eggs, seeds, nuts including almonds and raw cashews (not roasted), and high-protein grains such as quinoa and beans, but watch the carbs.

And fat? Do I need to eat low fat?

No, you should not eat low fat.  However, you need to only eat good fats. In fact, processed low fat foods have added sugar - yet another reason to avoid processed foods. You can eat as much GOOD fat as you believe you need, because yes, it all contains calories and some fat sources also contain carbs. Limit your fat sources to coconut oil, avocados, olive oil, olives, nut butters (in moderation), butter (not margarine), sour cream, cream cheese, and cheeses.  Many of these products have the added benefit of adding necessary protein to your diet.

Can I have fruit?

Fruit can be eaten in moderation, but stick with berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries in small amounts.  Always eat carbs, but especially fruit, with a protein source. Once sugar cravings have been eliminated, add apples with a small amount of almond butter (1 t.).

How does low-carb eating eliminate cravings?

In many cases, sugar (in the form of carbs) is the culprit. By eliminating bad carbs from your diet, you will starve any Candida overgrowth.

In addition, carbs cause a blood sugar roller-coaster effect. The quick energy boost is ultimately followed by a crash which leaves you depleted. Your body craves sugar to get that high back; you know what happens next. CRASH!

Do I have Candida?

If you've ever been given an antibiotic in your lifetime, there's a good chance you have some overgrowth of yeast in your small or large intestines. Candida, or yeast, is normal and helps the digestive process. However, it can become a problem if antibiotics are taken which kill the good probiotics and allow the Candida to keep growing, causing lesions in the intestines which start the cycle of food allergies, bloating, fatigue, and many other symptoms.

Check for Candida overgrowth:  Before bed, get a clear glass and fill it half way with water. Immediately in the morning, spit into the cup. Wait 5 to 10 minutes. If the water is cloudy, you have an overgrowth; if it has "legs" like spider webs, you have severe overgrowth.
